Three-way interaction: severity of tufted grass fungal infection affects Botanophila fly reproduction

نویسندگان

چکیده

Abstract The interaction between Botanophila flies and Epichloë fungi is one of the few interactions in which grass-associated are ‘pollinated’ by flies. We analysed gains losses for both partners time factors determining cost dynamics. A hypothesis regarding relationship changes severity grass infection with fungus, size fungal sexual structures (stromata), fly presence (expressed as egg larvae numbers) was tested. During a 3-year study conducted on permanent field plots, wild tussocks Holcus lanatus visits to stromata were monitored. An increase number shoots reduction observed. From year another, deposited fewer eggs stromata, larval body mass decreased. explain these results deterioration condition due increased infection, resulted higher maintenance costs parasite.

Genetic diversity of Neotyphodium fungal endophytes in three Iranian grass species using AFLP molecular markers

Genetic diversity of fungal endophytes, Neotyphodium species, was studied in grasses Festuca arundinacea, F. pratensis and Lolium perenne using AFLP  markers. Fungi were isolated from the host leaf sheaths and Neotyphodium species were selected based on morphological characteristics. To confirm identity of selected fungi belonging to the genus Neotyphodium, polymerase chain reaction was perform...

Tufted puffin reproduction reveals ocean climate variability.

Anomalously warm sea-surface temperatures (SSTs) are associated with interannual and decadal variability as well as with long-term climate changes indicative of global warming. Such oscillations could precipitate changes in a variety of oceanic processes to affect marine species worldwide. As global temperatures continue to rise, it will be critically important to be able to predict the effects...

Evolution of fungal sexual reproduction.

We review here recent advances in our understanding of the genetic, molecular and genomic basis of sex determination and sexual reproduction in the fungal kingdom as a window on the evolution of sex in eukaryotes more generally. In particular, we focus on the evolution of the mating-type locus and transitions in modes of sexual reproduction using examples from throughout the kingdom. These exam...

Bioprotective Alkaloids of Grass-Fungal Endophyte Symbioses.

Symbiotic interactions of C3 grasses with fungal endo-phytes, Epichloe species and their asexual relatives Neoty-pkodium, often provide the grass hosts with major fitness enhancements (for review, see Siegel and Bush [1994]). The endophytes protect host plants from both biotic and abiotic environmental stresses. Documented enhancements to host fitness include greater resistance to mammalian and...

Interaction of three-way DNA junctions with steroids.

DNA aptamers that bind to cholic acid were previously isolated by an in vitro selection method. Secondary structural prediction and deletion-mutant experiments suggested that the cholic-acid binding regions of 19 sequenced clones could form three-way-junction structures. In this article, the secondary structures of the sequenced clones and the structural requirements for binding to cholic acid ...
